Community Leaders Unite to Address Housing Shortage Across the Region
A coalition of local officials, nonprofit organizations, and residents outlined a comprehensive plan aimed at increasing affordable housing options over the next five years.
A broad coalition of community stakeholders gathered at the Riverside Community Center this week to unveil a five-year roadmap for addressing the region's deepening affordable housing crisis.
The plan, developed over eight months of community input sessions, calls for zoning reforms to allow higher-density housing near transit corridors, a new regional housing trust fund, and streamlined permitting for affordable developments.
"We've been talking about this problem for a decade," said coalition chair Amara Okonkwo. "This plan is different because it has teeth — real funding commitments and real accountability measures."
The coalition includes representatives from twelve municipalities, four nonprofit housing developers, the regional chamber of commerce, and several tenant advocacy organizations.
The plan will be presented to the Regional Planning Commission next month, where it will require approval from a majority of member municipalities to move forward.
