Volunteers Restore Historic Mural in Downtown District
A team of 30 volunteers spent three weekends bringing a beloved 1970s mural back to life, with support from local arts organizations.
A beloved mural that has graced the corner of Main and 4th Streets since 1974 has been fully restored, thanks to the efforts of 30 volunteers and a $12,000 grant from the Community Arts Foundation.
The mural, originally painted by local artist Rosa Delgado, depicts the neighborhood's history from its early settlement days through the civil rights era. Decades of weather and urban wear had faded much of the original work.
Lead restoration artist Tomás Rivera worked with Delgado's family to ensure the restored version stayed true to the original vision. "Rosa's daughter cried when she saw it finished," Rivera said. "That meant everything."
A dedication ceremony is planned for Saturday, September 20, at 11 a.m. The public is invited to attend.
